After having to travel on the Alligator River for so long and see nothing but landscape that Dante might think up, I was delighted to start seeing changes after passing the last vestages of the Alligator River which wound thru the first part of the canals. Finally, the last canal opened onto the Pongo River. What a gorgeous place!

When I entered the Pongo, there wasn't a breath of air and Doublewide glided along making the only visible ripples in the whole river. Wide, reasonably deep and lovely to look at.... All too soon I spotted Dowry Creek Marina and made my entry into their very well marked basin.

I hadn't tied up to the dock for 15 minutes before the wind started up. I was glad that it waited, as trying to come into that dock with the shallow water to my port side with the wind sweeping across the dock would have been quite difficult.

The wind continued through most of the night, but when I got up in the morning, the wind was dead calm, but there were large thunderheads in the distance. Very pretty, but with a feeling of foreboding. The owner came down and told me he wanted to move my boat to the other side, and that was fine with me, I didn't like the look of those clouds.

I was a bit concerned about the water level over there but he assured me it was at least 3 1/2 feet at low water. Now the boat is moved and the wind starts up in earnest. My worries about low water are over as the storm is blowing water into the creek rapidly and it soon rises to almost 7 feet. The storms are no longer on the horizon but actively gathering nearer. I secured Doublewide with 6 dock lines, two spring lines and 2 lines each from bow and stern. This was because one of the other folks up from me had a dock line break and were having a devil of a time trying to get their boat back into the slip and properly secured. When I saw her struggling, I ran over to see if I could help. It is always easier with two! So we got the boat back over to a piling, a good line around it and little Meander, the S-2 was safe.

The storm was pretty bad, high winds, lots of wave action and lightning strikes. There were tornado warnings in the next county as well. So, what to do? We had a storm party! Bob, Brenda and I drank some nice wine and laughed and told storm stories, then went out for Chinese. Storms make instant friends and these folks were the greatest - I hope that we can meet up again someday.

There was a Camano Trawler gathering at the Marina that weekend, and I hope that they all arrived safe and sound and had a good time. There is so much camaraderie on the water, that I hope we will always be able to have a boat and be part of the fellowship.
